Education

Donald Hickmott received a BA in geology from Amherst College in 1982. His Ph.D. in geochemistry was completed at M.I.T. in 1988. From 1988 to 1989 he did postdoctoral research at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, DC. In 1989 he was awarded a Director's Postdoctoral Fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). He became a technical staff member at LANL in 1992.

Experience

His recent research has been directed at diverse problems in geochemistry:

(1) understanding fluid-induced transport of trace elements in lithospheric environments using microanalytical methods (PIXE, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS));

(2) studying toxic-heavy metals in coals, flyash, and bottom ash;

(3) thermodynamic modeling of toxic heavy metals (Pb, Ba) in surficial aqueous environments;

(4) developing methods for reducing the bioavailability of metals in the environment; and

(5) application of novel analytical methods (ion implantation, SIMS, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, PIXE) to problems in geology and environmental science.

Currently, he is also heavily involved in the LANL ER Project HE Production Sites Team .
