Earth and Environmental Sciences Division
Responsibilities include the operation of the X-Ray Diffraction,
Thermal Analysis, and FTIR laboratories, maintain and upgrade the labs
and the related equipment, perform research and development activities
and sample analyses in support of the geology and geochemistry group,
and serve as system manager for the computers that service the
laboratories.
Research Interests:
Mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry of igneous and metamorphic rocks and
their alteration assemblages, thermodynamic modeling of mineral stability
fields, and geothermometry/barometry of metamorphic rocks.
Work in Progress:
(1) Quantitative XRD analyses of geologic samples from Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
(2) XRD analyses of trace abundances of fibrous zeolites in geologic
samples.
(3) Rehydration kinetics of the zeolite, analcime.
(4) Thermodynamic modeling of the formation and stability of zeolites.
(5) Water sorption/desorption and hysteresis in montmorillonites as a
function of water-vapor pressure.
