Tephra (Particulates) Analysis Laboratory

The tephra laboratory handles particulate samples of most any kind with special emphasis on volcanic ash (tephra). Samples can be investigated by their size distribution through sieving, optical (Horiba centrifugal light absorbance technique), or by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); specialized software (SFT) allows inversion of distribution data for analysis of their fragmentation and transport history. Particulate component analysis may be achieved by optical and SEM microscopy along with specialized treatment and sample preparations. The laboratory is generally available for use by researchers, and it includes computational support with a dedicated DEC 5000 workstation and a PC.
