Infrared Spectroscopy
EES-1 has a BioRad Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer FTS-40. This instrument is used primarily to measure vibrational spectra of liquids and minerals to identify specific molecular vibrations and to quantify the nature of mineral-adsorbate interactions. This instrument also is equipped with a microscope attachment, allowing measurement of infrared spectra of very small areas (<0.1 mm). Using this attachment, we have analyzed trace components in rocks and quantified variations across microscopic mineral grains. In addition, we have an attenuated total reflectance stage and a diffuse reflectance stage.
